In 2006 two little girls from the neighbouring compounds came to me and asked whether they could visit me at my house, as they were curious to see how we foreigners live. I invited them over and showed them around, answering all their questions. I started reading Indonesian children’s books to them, and after a while they asked if they could bring some friends along, and we added drawing to the mix. The group started to grow and I started organising the kids into groups and scheduling set times for our sessions. I wanted to make sure I could offer them meaningful activities, so I bought games, books, lego sets and puzzles. I quickly realised that the kids were very eager to learn, and that many of them had severe difficulties with maths and writing. They asked me to support them with their homework, and that’s how Project Cemadik came to life.
